Steve & Suzanne’s Video

Short Biography

After serving cross-culturally in Ghana and Vietnam, Steve and Suzanne now serve other cross-cultural workers as support-raised staff at Mission Training International (MTI) in Colorado. MTI is located north of Colorado Springs, and was the place that debriefed Steve & Suzanne in 2008 and 2018 after returning from serving overseas.  At MTI, they facilitate the Debriefing and Renewal Program (DAR) for missionaries on home leave, retiring or otherwise leaving their field of service. Drawing from their years of experience, the Bucheles invite the Holy Spirit to help guide participants as they pause to reflect on their journey and begin to process their major transition.

Before joining the MTI staff they served in Vietnam, on the staff of Hanoi International Fellowship. Prior to that, they served at Ashesi University in Ghana, from 2006-08, and again from 2014-2018.  At Ashesi, Suzanne was a professor and then Provost and Steve lectured in leadership, as well as served as an informal chaplain to students, faculty and staff.

Steve is an ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church, served several Central Texas churches as lead pastor, associate pastor of discipleship, and director of music and technology, and served as an Interim Pastor at two churches. Suzanne took early retirement from Southwestern University, where she was an Associate Professor of Computer Science. They have been blissfully married for more than 35 years and have three young adult children and two grandchildren.

In their spare time, Steve and Suzanne like to backpack, cook and eat interesting food, hike, snorkel, and snow ski. Suzanne has recently taken up cake decorating (for her grandchildren).

Longer Bio

Steve & Suzanne live out the gospel by helping cross-cultural workers remember who God created them to be.

Debriefing It is not counseling nor coaching but guided, active listening paired with a curriculum for individuals and small groups. Participants tell their stories, and together, we look at the impact that story is having on them in a confidential environment so they can view the past, present, and future from a God-honoring perspective. The goal is to help cross-cultural workers remember the depth and breadth of God’s love for them and (re-)discover the full embodiment of God’s call in their lives so that participants can move into the future as healthy, whole people and continue ministry with effectiveness, endurance, and personal vitality.

In addition to debriefing, Suzanne is the logistics coordinator for MTI’s annual Mental Health and Missions conference in the DFW area. Together, they are faculty for the training programs Foundations of Debriefing and Methods of Debriefing.

Before joining MTI, the Bucheles served at a university in Ghana and an international church in Hanoi, Vietnam.
